Following in the footsteps of shoegaze pioneer My Bloody Valentine, the band seized hold of the ever-growing shoegaze sound, known to have “abrasive guitars and ethereal vocals,” though they weren’t particularly favored by critics. The band earned a name for themselves in the indie rock community with the release of their debut studio album, Just for a Day, which went on to reach number 10 on the UK Indie Chart. The name Slowdive was taken from a dream that bassist Nick Chaplin had and the single of the same name by one of Goswell’s favorite bands, Siouxie and the Banshees. Having been friends since the age of six, Rachel Goswell and Neil Halstead formed Slowdive after performing together as the Pumpkin Fairies, a project that stemmed from their Sunday youth group.
